Resolved Question: Looking for a book but dont remember author or title. I do remember certain information.?

The cover of the book had a drawing or picture of a railroad track. It was a book about this evil spirit that made people do crazy things. One story from the book I remember was about a guy who purposely left his wallet by a payphone at a mall. He watched a kid pick it up. The guy followed the kid and watched as the kid spent the money. Some how the guy confronts and convices the kid to his car and he kidnaps the boy. I don't want to make anyone upset, but I never got to finish this book and I can't find it. I don't know how old it is. I got the book in 2002, but don't know what year it was published. I think it was by a local author from Humble or Houston, Texas. I can honestly say this book made me very upset, but it was the kind of thing I couldn't turn away from. I moved a while back and had missplaced the book. I'm afraid I left it back in Houston.
